Game On for Climate – Engaging Youth in Climate Education Through Physical Activity
🤔 The Challenge
Scottish Sports Futures (SSF) works with young people across various communities, aiming to inspire positive change through sports and physical activity. Recognising the growing importance of climate education, SSF sought to engage their young people in sustainability and climate awareness in a way that was both interactive and relevant.
The challenge was to create a programme that combined physical activity with climate education, making the learning experience engaging, fun, and impactful.
💡 The Solution
Sustainable Pathways collaborated with SSF to design a bespoke workshop titled "Game On for Climate." This interactive workshop was specifically tailored to SSF’s unique audience—young people who are more likely to engage through active, hands-on experiences.
Here’s how we brought it to life:
- Interactive Workshop Design: The "Game On for Climate" workshop was structured to integrate physical activities with climate and sustainability education. The workshop involved various games and activities that required participants to move, think, and collaborate while learning about key sustainability concepts. This approach ensured that the learning process was dynamic, engaging, and aligned with the interests of SSF’s young participants.
- Train-the-Trainer Model: To ensure the sustainability of the programme, we developed a train-the-trainer model. We began by delivering a live demo of the workshop to SSF’s staff, guiding them through the process of facilitating the sessions themselves. This hands-on training empowered SSF staff to confidently deliver the workshop across different communities.
- Facilitator Toolkit: To further support SSF staff, we created a comprehensive facilitator’s toolkit. This included detailed guides, instructional videos, and resources that staff could use to deliver the workshop effectively. The toolkit provided ongoing support, allowing SSF to maintain the quality and consistency of the programme as it was rolled out across various locations.
🙌 The Outcome
The "Game On for Climate" project successfully merged physical activity with climate education, creating an engaging and memorable experience for young participants. SSF staff, now equipped with the skills and resources to deliver the workshop, have begun implementing the programme in communities across Scotland. The train-the-trainer model ensures that the impact of the programme is scalable and sustainable, reaching more young people over time.
Quote from Jude Reid at Scottish Sports Futures: "The collaboration with Sustainable Pathways has been invaluable. They understood our needs and designed a programme that speaks directly to our young people. The 'Game On for Climate' workshop is a game-changer in how we approach climate education."
