Avoiding Death by PowerPoint, The Science Behind Serious Games

Let’s be honest: most workshops are forgettable.

People turn up, nod along, maybe scribble a few notes… and then return to business as usual.

It’s not that the content is bad, it’s often well-researched and thoughtfully prepared. The problem is that the format isn’t built for engagement, reflection, or change.

That’s the gap serious games are designed to fill.

Because of this, we’ve built a platform to help facilitators and educators run more immersive, interactive, and impactful workshops.

But this isn’t just about novelty. It’s backed by solid thinking and science.

🧠 What Are Serious Games?

Serious games use the structure and mechanics of games: decisions, consequences, time limits, scoring, not to entertain, but to educate, engage, and provoke reflection.

They're designed with a purpose: to help people explore complex challenges, navigate uncertainty, and see the real-world consequences of their choices in a safe, simulated space.

Think of them as interactive case studies that people live through instead of read.

On the Involv platform, each serious game is structured as a series of rounds. Some present information, others ask participants to choose between paths.  All are designed to stimulate group discussion and shared decision-making.

⚡️ What Problem Do Serious Games Solve?

Most traditional workshops still rely on static content, slides, lectures, or group exercises that don’t always land.

Common pain points we hear from facilitators and educators include:

  • “People switch off halfway through.”
  • “We didn’t get beyond surface-level conversation.”
  • “I want participants to do more than just listen.”
  • “It felt like we were telling, not exploring.”

Serious games flip that model. Instead of being passive recipients, participants are now active players in a shared experience.

They make decisions.

They debate.

They feel the consequences.

And crucially, they remember what they learned.

🧪 So… What’s the Science?

Serious games aren’t just fun. They work and there’s a growing body of research to explain why.

Here are five key reasons:

1. Active learning increases retention

The National Training Laboratories estimate that people retain 75% of what they do, compared to only 5–10% of what they hear or read. Games require participants to act, decide, and engage, making learning stickier and more meaningful.

2. Simulations mirror real-world thinking

Serious games put people in realistic scenarios where they can test strategies, explore complexity, and see outcomes, all without real-world risk. That reflective, experiential approach is key to deep learning.

3. Emotion strengthens memory

When people feel something, curiosity, uncertainty, tension, or surprise, they’re far more likely to remember the moment. Making difficult decisions together generates emotion, which anchors learning.

4. Shared decisions build commitment

Group decision-making triggers active discussion, critical thinking and ownership. It creates buy-in, especially when people see how their ideas influence outcomes.

5. Games enhance psychological safety

Because the game provides structure and rules, it creates a safe space for everyone to participate, even those who might hold back in traditional discussions. Everyone has a voice.

🎯 So, Who Are Serious Games For?

Serious games are ideal for facilitators, L&D professionals, team leads, educators, and change-makers who want to take workshops beyond the typical.

With Involv, you don’t need to build a game from scratch.

You just choose a scenario, set up your session, and guide your group through the experience.

Whether you're running a 45-minute lunch-and-learn or a full strategic development workshop, the games on Involv give you structure, flow, and impact without the heavy lift.

💡 Real-World Applications

So far, we’ve used Involv in:

  • Leadership and values-based workshops
  • Sustainability and systems thinking sessions
  • Diversity and inclusion conversations
  • Organisational change programmes
  • Team development off-sites
  • With School pupils and staff

We currently have six games live, with more on the way, all varying in length, topic, and complexity. Each one is designed to spark discussion, shift perspectives, and get people involved.
